End-of-Year Greetings

My fellow Mauritian brothers and sisters,
It gives me immense pleasure to convey to you my
best wishes and greetings on the occasion of
Christmas and the New Year 2011.
Over the last year, I have been happy to note that
thousands of our citizens who have settled in the
UK continue to maintain very close ties with
Mauritius and take much pride in its socioeconomic
development. Moreover, the Mauritian
community in UK continues to contribute in a
large way to strengthen the friendly relations
between UK and Mauritius and make Mauritius
better known through the various socio-cultural
activities which are a colourful aspect of our
Rainbow Nation.
In this respect, and as 2010 draws to an end, I have
a special message of appreciation for the various
Mauritian Socio-Cultural Associations in the UK
who continue to work relentlessly to promote and
serve the interest of the country. I also express my
deep appreciation to them for their unflinching
support provided to me in the performance of my
duties.
As you are all aware, 2010 has been marked by
events of great national interest. Indeed it has been
a year which has been marked by the general
election in Mauritius with our Prime Minister, Dr
the Hon. Navinchandra Ramgoolam being reelected
to power with a sweeping majority.
The election was also a plebiscite by the
Mauritian population of the Prime Minister’s
vision and socio-economic reform agenda at a time
when the rest of the world is facing great financial
turmoil. The population has clearly expressed its
support for the pursuit of measures in the
transformation of Mauritius into a more
prosperous, modern and just society in order to
realise a brighter future for all our citizens.
As in 2009, this past year has also been marked
by economic challenges on a global scale. Indeed
the cloud of profound uncertainty will still loom
over the global economy for a while. The events
have also exposed the vulnerability of the global
economic and financial systems.
However, in Mauritius, the Government through
sound management of the economy have ensured
that the global economic shockwaves did not hit us
with much severity. Nevertheless, we continue to
be very watchful of the on-going global events and
we continue to act very prudently.
Moreover as demonstrated in our recent budget,
the Government is working hard to ensure that the
economy becomes more structurally sound,
competitive and resilient.
Finally allow me once again to wish you all and
your family the very best wishes for the New Year.
Abhimanu Kundasamy
High Commissioner
London, December 2010
